I am in my 60s, and I still love playing badminton — four to five days a week. Most of the group I play with are much younger than me, but that does not stop me.

The game gives me energy, joy, and focus. It keeps me connected, sharp, and alive.

But my body often reminds me of the effort. The next morning, I wake up with a dull tiredness in my shoulders, thighs, hamstrings, IT band, calves, and sometimes even my lower back.

It is not pain in the alarming sense, but a soreness — a heaviness that makes me aware of the strain. On some days it’s just a quiet reminder, but on others it could easily tempt me to skip the next session.

That’s when my little ritual with pure essential oils comes to the rescue.

My Essential Oil Recovery Blend

Here’s the blend I prepare and use:

  • 40 drops Rosemary Essential Oil – improves circulation, relieves muscle fatigue

  • 20 drops Nutmeg Essential Oil – warming, eases stiffness and deep soreness

  • 5 drops Cardamom Essential Oil – gently soothes tension and relaxes muscles

  • 50 ml Walnut Oil (carrier) – light, nourishing, non-greasy base

After my morning bath, I massage a few drops of this blend into the tired areas — legs, shoulders, and lower back. Within minutes, the heaviness begins to lift. If I remember to repeat the massage again at night, the recovery is even deeper. I sleep better, and I wake up ready to move again.

Pain Is a Signal, Not an Enemy

Over the years, I have learned that pain is the body’s way of talking to the mind. It should not be ignored. It tells us where healing and attention are needed.

So when the soreness is stronger than usual, I don’t force myself back onto the court. I simply continue my ritual, let my body recover, and wait for the pain to subside before I play again. This mindful approach has kept me consistent, without injury, and able to enjoy the game I love.
